“Swimming for Smiles” “One hundred years from now it will not matter what kind of car we drove, what kind of a house we lived in, how much we had in the bank account, nor what our clothes looked like. But the world may be a little better because we were important in the life of a boy or a girl" Hey everyone. I’m Liz. This is my third year participating in the GCCS. I am currently working on getting a degree in Rehabilitation Services at Florida State University. I’d like to say I was born to do this kind of work, but I know that my experience at the Florida Lions Camp (FLC) has helped to light my path. FLC is a non-profit organization, whose sole purpose is to make the world a better place through camping. FLC is your typical summer camp. There is swimming, fishing, campfires, singing and more. Only FLC adapts their programs to fit the needs of those with disabilities. I have been involved with FLC for about 10 years now and I have developed a strong bond with many of the campers. I started out helping out in housekeeping as a naďve young girl and I have now worked my way up to Cabin Director, as a mature young woman. I owe much of this to the campers of FLC. They have taught me many lessons. My first year doing the GCCS I thought I couldn’t even swim 1 mile. But I had fans on the sidelines and the more I swam, the more they donated. I swam 2 miles and raised $5000 before the whistle blew. Last year I swam 3 miles, and raised $4000. This year I would really LOVE to raise enough money to send 10 disabled children/adults to camp. $7500 seems like a huge goal to reach but I know there are many people out there who care to help and I believe we can do it. So PLEASE help me send 10 campers to camp. I truly appreciate the support that I got for my plunge for a purpose in the past and your time and care for helping me this year!
