       To the Lions

January 9, 2000

My twin boys, Derek and Sean were sent to the Florida Lions Camp last year. Derek and Sean were 4 months premature and weighed in at 1 pound 10 ounces and due to the amount of oxygen, plus their low birth weight, they became legally blind. I’m glad to say that they can function in a normal classroom setting and they do have vision therapy in their school.

I was very hesitant to send my boys off to camp, fear of not knowing how they would  function without Mom and Dad tormented me. However, when we went to pick them up at camp, we were thrilled at the excitement in their voice on how much fun they had. They asked if they could stay two more weeks or even longer! Both of them were talking at the same time about all they did and how much fun they had. I had to ask them to speak one at a time so I could take this all in. They loved their counselors, they loved sleeping in their cabins, they tell me that everything they did they enjoyed. I truly believe that they got a lot out of camp.

They have only spent the night at Grandma’s house and have never been away from family. I believe they have learned that they can function on their own, they learned responsibility on taking care of themselves, they learned what it is to share, to take turns and to make friends, they had a fear of the pool and of boating, that too was an experience that they overcame, they are very picky eaters, but they learned to decide what to choose for dinner and experienced eating different food. Of course they say Mom is still the best cook in the world, but that the camp food wasn’t as bad as they thought might be. I can’t put into words their excitement of going to camp. It was an experience they will never forget. We dropped off two little immature children, and picked up two self confident little boys.

Keep up the good work! The dedication that all the Lions have in helping the blind and visually impaired children, such as my own, is beyond words. How can you thank so many for giving children an opportunity to be around kids just like them, not being singled out because they are different. The Lions Camp made a profound impact in a positive way to my boys. They learned that they can do anything they want – and that is a priceless gift that the Lions Club gave to my children and for that we thank you.

May God bless you all and again thank you for giving my boys a chance at life.

                                        Twincerely,

                                        Ronye Ferguson
