of Florida, My name is Nell Knot, and I own and operate a Group Home and Training Center for five Developmentally Delayed adults. My ‘family’ has attended the Lions Camp in Lake Wales up to twice a year over the last two years. I wish you could talk to my ‘family’ to understand the joy and happiness it gives them to attend these sessions. I have a five-year degree in Mental Retardation, trained in England. I find the Lions Camp unique in that it is created, planned and run by a young population from many walks and countries of the world. The camp provides information, resources and support to individuals with special needs or disabilities, and their families. Each counselor gives their individuality and friendship to our less fortunate population. Individuals that receive services from the Lions Camp have varied needs that span varying age groups and disabilities. The camp involvement with the Blind, Hearing Impaired, Spinal Bifida, Prater Willi Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Autism, MS, and Mental Retardation serving our population based on each person’s special needs. The sessions work on, and maintain independence; how to deal with change and sometimes inappropriate behaviors in person’s with disabilities, helping the disabled prepare for life in the real world. Having people with limited abilities go to a camp without parents. The disabled need their wishes to be acknowledged. These sessions are where young adults can get together, have fun and learn different skills, crafts and the most important interact with disabled and non-disabled adults.
Let’s figure out a way to communicate and became a loud voice to enable the
camp to continue this wonderful work.
Thank you for listening. |
