Joe W. Ayers, a member of the Cypress Gardens
Lions Club and first vice president of the Florida Lions Camp in Lake Wales, was
the speaker at the April 4 meeting of the Palm Coast Lions Club.
Florida Lions Camp is a private, non-profit camp
established and dedicated to serving the needs of youth with visual impairments
and other challenging disabilities.
The camp began operating in 1974 and is considered one of the leading facilities
of its type in the United States.
Ayers said all individuals 5-years-old or older
are eligible to attend, with a goal of enhancing the quality of life for the
campers through a diversity of experiences and instilling self worth and
independence for those who are visually challenged. A variety of traditional summer camp activities include swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, camping out and cooking over a fire, games, arts and crafts, singing and dancing, and hay wagon rides. Activities are adapted to the ages and abilities of each camper to ensure maximum participation. |
The speaker said sessions for campers with visual
impairments are divided into two age groups: a one-week session for 9 to
12-year-olds and a one-week session for 13 to 18-year-olds.
Also offered are one-week sessions for campers 5 to 12-year-old with
multiple disabilities and a one-week session for campers ages 13 to 21.
There also are two weeks of adult resort camp for
campers over 18 with multiple disabilities.
A camp nurse is on duty 24 hours per day and the
camp accommodates about 400 campers each year, operating during June, July, and
August.
The Lions camp is a member of the American Camping
Association and received a perfect score of 100 for 2001.
In addition to his camp involvement, Ayers serves
on the board of directors of Project Right to Sight and has received many awards
for his accomplishments in Lions activities.
Palm Coast Lions president Jack Ritchie presented a check for $1000 to
Ayers for the Florida Lions Camp. |
